:: How much server space do I need for my web site? ::.Web Hosts have gotten a little rediculous nowadays taking advantage of the fact that most people don't have any idea what they need or don't need and offering them plans with what appears to be a great value for the money. Case in point, my latest e-mail hosting solicitation from www.globat.com offering a mind boggeling 2,000 MB (2 GB) of server disk space for only $7.50 per month. You could put about 80,000 normal web pages on 2,000 MB of space. How much is enough for your web site?It really depends on your content. "Text" documents take up very little space. You could place hundreds of pages of text on a 1 Mb web site. If you're going to fill your site with images, your space may be exhausted more quickly (images typically vary from a few kilobytes (Kb) to tens of Megabytes (Mb). In case you're wondering, there are 1000 Kilobytes in a Megabyte. Music (audio) files are much larger and video files are the largest of all. So if your site consists mostly of text, images and maybe an Access database, you can get by with 50 MB, certainly less than 100 MB. How much does extra space cost if I run out ?Web Hosts charge very little for extra web space, roughly 10 cents per MB per month. |
Q & A Topics ::. [ web advertising basics ] our web hosting ::.Our BASIC Windows hosting plan provides 100 MB of space for $9.95/month. We've never had a client exceed the 100 MB allotment, but additional space if needed is $0.10 per MB per month. tip ::.The most common reasons for using more web space than you need are allowing
junk mail to accumulate and leaving unnecessary files on the server. |
